Prizes include bursaries and a feature in CanWEA’s 2017 Friends of Wind calendar

Ottawa, Ontario, June 15, 2016 – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is launching its Power of Wind contest to mark Global Wind Day, a worldwide event that occurs annually to give people in Canada and around the world an opportunity to explore wind energy.

The Power of Wind contest invites students entering or in post-secondary education to submit a photo or visual image that illustrates, expresses or in some way conveys their vision of how wind energy can contribute to Canada’s renewable energy future. The top three winning entrants are eligible for a $1,000 bursary. Winning entries and honourable mentions will be featured in the 2017 Friends of Wind calendar.

“On its eighth anniversary, Global Wind Day marks a year of important climate and energy policy as governments around the world and right here in Canada look for ways to decarbonize their energy future,” said Robert Hornung, president of CanWEA. “For a country like Canada, with the huge quantity of high-quality renewable resources, we can be a leader in demonstrating the energy transition that countries around the globe must make to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. We look forward to seeing the creative ways students present their views on how wind energy can help us build on the positive progress Canada has made to become a global renewable energy leader.”

Over the last five years, the annual Power of Wind contest has attracted more than a thousand thoughtful and creative submissions from youth around Canada on the importance of building a renewable energy future.

We encourage you to learn more about Global Wind Day activities around the world, enter CanWEA’s Power of Wind contest if you are eligible, and join the conversation on Twitter #GlobalWindDay.
