Happy Global Wind Day!
June 15, 2015
As we celebrate June 15, Global Wind Day – a day for discovering wind, its power and the possibilities it holds to change our world – we should also feel pride in how far we’ve come in working together to build a renewable energy future.
Just a few years ago, when I started in the wind industry, Canada had under 3,500 MW of installed wind energy capacity, today we’ve surpassed 10,000 MW! That’s a huge accomplishment. So today, we take some time to reflect on this.
What’s been most rewarding for me is to watch students all across Canada embrace wind energy and speak to the importance of developing its power. Poetry, published spoken word albums, art, creative videos have all been used by students to convey this important message. And I am more than excited to see what this year’s Power of Wind contest will bring.
Global Wind Day activities have been organized by CanWEA members across Canada in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Quebec and around the world. The activities showcase the range of different aspects of the wind industry and the many benefits the industry brings to local communities – clean air, clean electricity, local economic development, varied and strong electricity systems, electricity cost stability, to name just a few – and the one important benefit it brings to us all – a solution to climate change.
We should all be proud of the fact that we are a part of something larger than us and that we are taking small steps needed to build a clean energy future that will benefit us and the many generation that follow us.
That’s a lot to celebrate! What will you do to embrace the day? After all, it is the small victories that will get us to where we want to be.
Finally, and most importantly, a huge thank-you to all of you today for your continued support of wind energy!
