Did you know?

US statistics show 1 billion birds are killed by colliding with buildings each year and up to 100 million by vehicles. By comparison, it’s estimated that commercial wind turbines in the US cause the direct deaths of only 0.01– 0.02% of all of the birds killed annually by collisions with man-made structures and activities.

Wind and First Nations Seminar

CanWEA WIND MATTERS 2008
Wind and First Nations Seminar

May 15-16 2008
Crowne Plaza Hotel
Ottawa, Ontario

This 1½ day event will explore a path forward in the development of utility-scale wind energy projects on First Nations lands and with First Nations people across Canada. This practically-oriented workshop will look at the nature of the relationship between developers, governments and First Nations across Canada, and explore the social, economic and policy issues that will influence the growth of wind on First Nations lands: What is the duty to consult? What does experience tell us about developing energy projects on First Nations lands? What are the legal and regulatory issues in various jurisdictions? Participants will learn about the perspectives and priorities of each stakeholder and examine ways of collaborating to the benefit of all.

Who Should Attend?

  • Representatives of First Nations communities interested in the development of wind projects on their lands, either as project partners or direct investors
  • Representatives of the development community interested in exploring the nature of the relationship, the duty to consult, and the priorities of First Nations in the project development process
  • Representatives of federal, provincial and territorial governments
  • Utilities and regulatory officials involved in First Nations development
